El Paso Tacos & Tequila - Main Site

4300 Stone Mountain Hwy, Lilburn, GA 30047 Well, I met my son for dinner at El Paso.

Love this place and it’s new. So new, I can’t even find its address on their home page. Wanted to get his take -- 22 and I don’t suspect it is his first margarita. It’s certainly not mine.

6 o’clock and it’s got a pretty good mix - families and older couples. El Paso has a slight edge -- background music with a beat that you won’t find from your local mariachi band, bright murals -- picture cinco de mayo meets dia de muertos. The message is clear -- we don’t want to be like everyone else.

Four things I like about this place:

First, the atmosphere. Some background music to give the place a little life, but it’s still quiet enough to carry on a conversation with your guest without yelling. [My pet peeve is restaurants that are loud to the point of not being able to have a normal conversation] They find the right balance, making it a great option for a date night with tacos. It is lively, without being overpowering.

Second, the service. My first visit here was during their soft opening. You visit a restaurant during a soft opening and you kind of expect a few bumps. I guess it is the cost of being first. There were a few minor ones -- mostly related to product availability. [These issues have been remedied] The service was great on my first visit and the service is equally great after my third visit. Thanks to Maria for taking great care of us.

Third, every type of seating imaginable. Table, booth, high-top, indoor, patio, and outside. No matter your preference, I think they have it covered.

Fourth, the food. I love the pork carnitas along with a top shelf margarita. The margaritas come in small, medium, and “I need to call uber”. The drink is polished off with real fruit. I realize that there are some that don’t enjoy fruit floating in their drink, but I am a sucker for fruit -- in my salad, in my dessert, and in my drinks. It’s like spearfishing - digging out the blueberries and strawberries with my straw after I finished my drink.

The carnita plate comes with larger chunks of pork. The meat is seasoned and it’s worth trying a piece in pre-taco form without all the sour cream, guacamole, and greenery to really appreciate its flavor. It came with a side of spanish rice and sopa. Nice size meal.

I need to plan another trip out later in the evening to get a sense of its nighttime vibe, but this place is a hit and a welcomed addition to the area that is really in need of a few more eateries. Great for a casual date, an evening out with the family, or flying solo at the bar. Low key vibe with good food and good service.
